Poverty isn’t something to celebrate, especially when it’s generational. Do not also sit back and think it’ll naturally go away. It may not, this is where prayer comes in. Talking to God is free, and in 1 Samuel 1:1-28, Hannah suffered from generational poverty and barrenness. However, even with her husband Elkanah’s love, she was tormented by her rival wife Peninnah. She was mocked for childlessness but she refused to give up.

Hannah simply turned to the only One who could change her story – God. She prayed at the temple and made a vow to dedicate her future child to His service. God answered her prayer and blessed her with Samuel, who became a great prophet and leader in Israel.

Generational poverty and curses can be broken through prayer and faith in God. Don’t let circumstances define your future when God can change your story. All you will need is prayer for our God of transformation to turn things around.

Prayer to Break Generational Poverty

Let’s pray.

1. Oh Lord, Help me to Soundly Educate myself

Our Father,

Education is one way out of the ruins of poverty. This is why I’m here before you in need of financial wisdom to break the cycle of generational poverty in my family.

In Proverbs 1:7, your word says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” I hereby pray for a thirst for knowledge and a desire to learn how to manage my finances.

Help me to soundly educate myself on the principles of good financial management,. Joseph was smart in his stewardship of resources (Genesis 41:39-40). I pray for wisdom as I look for resources to study, whether it’s online courses, books, or mentors.

May your Holy Spirit guide me as I study and implement the principles of financial literacy. Dear God, I want to be a good steward of the resources you have entrusted to me. I declare that I am blessed. I am empowered to break the curse of poverty, and I trust your goodness for my life.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

2. Prayer for a Heaven-sent Mentor

Father in Heaven,

I cannot do this alone. I mean that I can’t pull myself out of lack of funds without your support. Please, grant me a heaven-sent mentor to guide me out of the cycle of generational poverty for it says in Proverbs 11:14, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”

My prayer request is for you, oh Lord, to provide me with an experienced mentor, someone to teach me how to budget, save, and invest. Even Moses was mentored by Jethro, and Timothy was mentored by Paul. I pray for a mentor who will speak wisdom into my life (Exodus 18:13-27, 1 Timothy 1:2).

May my mentor be someone trustworthy and compassionate. Someone who will help me to apply biblical principles to my finances is who I need.

I pray for connection with someone who will encourage and support me out of poverty, and who will help me to develop a mindset of both abundance and generosity. May your Holy Spirit guide our conversations each time we talk about my finances, and may I be an obedient student, ready to learn and apply the wisdom.

Amen.

3. Please Go, Change Mindset towards money

Heavenly Father,

It says in Romans 12:2:

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

I may have a terrible money mindset, which explains why I’m still stuck. But, of course, I have you. I have come so that you reshape my thought process and beliefs. Please, transform me when it comes to knowledge about money. I want to be able to see it as a thing of blessing, rather than a source of stress and scarcity.

Help me to remember that situational poverty is temporary and that with your resources, I can make progress and break free from the cycle of poverty.

Didn’t Joseph rise from prison to prosperity? He did so through your favor (Genesis 41). I hereby declare that I too can rise above my current circumstances. May your Holy Spirit renew my mind. Help me develop a mindset of generosity. May I be a good steward of the resources and use them to bless others while also bringing glory to your name.

4. Help me to make good use of community resources

Dear God,

I am fortunate to exist in a community where there are lots of resources to make good use of. However, I am unaware of the best way to approach the abundance. I know that you have provided an abundance of community and government resources to help me overcome situational poverty.

Now, guide me to the resources that will support me on my journey out of this rough cycle. Your word says in Matthew 25:14-30:

Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!

Please, make me use these resources to build a stronger foundation for my financial future. Even Ruth found provision in the community of Bethlehem (Ruth 2). Therefore, I declare that I too can find provision in my community and through government resources.

I call on your Holy Spirit to guide me, and may I be a blessing to others. May I never forget that every perfect gift comes from you, and may I always give you glory.

5. May You be by my side as I set financial goals

Our Father,

Won’t you stand by me this time? I know you will. I am planning to set financial goals because I seriously want to overcome situational poverty. In Proverbs 16:3, you asked me to commit my work to You, and my plans will be established. Father, I commit my plans to you and ask that you establish them according to Your will.

Help me to be specific and intentional. My goals should be in line with your plan for my life. May I be disciplined and focused. Father, be there with me as I develop a budget with positive cash flow, pay down high-interest debt, and build a savings safety net.

I believe that your Holy Spirit will guide me as I make decisions. Help me to accurately allocate my resources, and may I always honor you with my finances. Make my financial goals a tool for blessing. Help me to always remember that every perfect gift comes from you.

6. A Prayer to cut unnecessary Spending habit

Dear Heavenly Father,

Even though I have only a little, I’ve seen and acknowledged that unnecessary spending has held me back from financial freedom. Therefore, I need you to help me be trustworthy with the resources you have entrusted to me. Help me to cut unnecessary spending habits that have kept me in poverty.

It says in Luke 16:10-11:

Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.

Father, make me trusted with very little so that I can attract more and pull myself out of poverty.

Whatever plans I set for myself, be it a 30-day rule, let me be able to wait patiently before making purchases. May I be disciplined and intentional in reviewing my monthly expenses, and also find ways to lower them according to Your will. I call on your Holy Spirit to guide me in making decisions about using my resources. May I always honor you with my funds. May I be a good steward who always remembers that you are responsible for my well-being.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

7. Heavens Help me clear all my Debt

Our Father,

I am here today for deliverance from debt. It has weighed me down for so long.

They cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke away their chains. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Psalm 107:13-16

It’s my turn, and I am crying out to you for help to break the chains of debt. I have decided not to be a captive anymore. I want to be able to develop a plan to pay down my debts, starting with the ones with the highest interest rates.

May I be disciplined while I try to clear my debt. May I seek out resources such as balance transfer credit cards, lower-interest personal loans, and non-profit credit counseling organizations to help me manage my debt. Joseph rose from debt and slavery to prosperity (Genesis 41), so I declare that I too can rise above my debt.

Let your Holy Spirit guide me, oh Lord. Help me to honor you with my resources, and always remember that my happiness comes from you.

Amen.

8. May I avoid payday and predatory loans at all cost

Oh Lord,

It is written in Proverbs 22:26-27, “Do not be one who shakes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts; if you lack the means to pay, your very bed will be snatched from under you.” I do not want to be in this situation with payday loans and loan sharks coming after my peace. Help me with resources to avoid their trap because even though they promise quick cash, what they actually deliver is long-term financial burdens.

Find me better alternative resources and options, such as local credit unions, bad credit loans with fair terms, and side hustles to increase my income. And while exploring these alternatives, may I make quality decisions that will honor you with my resources.

Daniel resisted the temptation of the king’s food and prospered in his faith in Daniel 1. I also declare that I too can resist the temptation of quick fixes. Let your Holy Spirit guide me as I make decisions about my funds. Also, make me a good steward of what you have given me

9. Prayer to Know where I stand financially

Dear Heavenly Father,

I want to count the cost and know where I stand financially. Help me to have a clear picture of my income, expenses, assets, and debts, and bless me with the courage to face the reality of my financial situation, whether it’s good or bad. Lord, I know that you are a God of abundance. You desire to prosper me, not to harm me as you have promised in Jeremiah 29:11. But I also know that I have a role to play in managing the resources you’ve given me.

As I examine my financial situation, I pray for a sense of hope and optimism. Even if my current situation is not where I want it to be, help me to see the possibilities for growth. Give me the confidence to keep working after financial freedom. I need your guidance every step of the way. Please, be with me all the time so that I may not make terrible decisions that will ruin my already poverty-ridden status.

Thank you, Lord, for your love and care for this brethren. We know that you are always with us, and that blessing us is always your priority in every area of our life. As we have prayed for abundance, and for you to eliminate generational poverty, please do so that we may have a reason to announce your works in our lives. Amen!
