A Very Short Prayer Before a Game

It’s just a game, but like any game, we want to win. Now, we will say a short prayer before this game to hand over control to God. We are not forcing God to make us win, but rather, praying for Him to help us avoid mistakes that will make us lose. It’s time to be focused and pray for a spirit of fairness and sportsmanship.

Even the Bible encourages us in our endeavors: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7). This reminds us of the story of David and Goliath where both courage and trust in God can make us WIN. David defeated the giant Goliath with faith and a simple sling: “David said to the Philistine, ‘You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty.'” (1 Samuel 17:45).

As we prepare for the game, let us come together in prayer for strength and the safety of everyone.

Without the fans, there will be nobody to entertain. The fans are the reason the athletes are here today. Father, guide them as they leave their homes and jobs in their numbers to this game. Help them to create a positive atmosphere throughout the minutes. For it is written, “Encourage one another and build each other up.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). We pray for You to keep them safe and let their presence be a source of support for the teams. Guide them to show kindness and sportsmanship, no matter the outcome of the game. When it all comes to an end, guide us in our post-match interactions. May everyone remember to be respectful and kind, regardless of the outcome. Let players and coaches speak with humility. Where necessary, may we be able to celebrate our efforts made and lessons learned in the encounter rather than fight.

May fans and officials also share in a spirit of good sportsmanship. Allow post-game conversations to be filled with positivity and constructive feedback. Let everyone appreciate the experience and the sense of community it brings. And most importantly, let us leave with a fresh sense of camaraderie and mutual respect.

In the Holy name of Jesus.

Amen
